Thanks to funding from the Sandwell Learning Network (SLN), we are delivering ESOL (English) at Pre-Entry and Entry 1 Levels. Sessions are held Wednesday's 9.30am - 1.30pm. Course 1 is September- December 2025 (Course full). Course 2 is January- May 2026 (taking registrations). Sessions are for Beginners and Improvers. Interested persons should register their interest by contacting the Brasshouse Community centre. Course will cover The course contents are as followed: 1) Alphabet and basic writing, spelling through writing and spellings techniques, Say the word, blend the sound, identify the number of sounds, identify the individual sounds, spell the words, blend and check the spellings and repeat. 2) Use of numbers and quantities in everyday life. Use of numbers for shopping, relate numbers to cost of living. Discuss prices of different bills, like electricity, water, gas, council tax and holidays. Using numbers to count items and get learners to use basic calculations. 3) Use of Emergency services, when to use emergency services. What number to dial for the emergency services. Different types of emergencies, including fire, ambulance, police and mountain rescue. 4) Making an appointment and visiting the GP/Hospital/Doctor/Dentist and other public services, including urgent care centres, 111, and Pharmacy. Directions by using the map of local GPs, Pharmacies or urgent care centres. 5) Use of NHS App and booking appointments online, ordering repeat prescriptions and accessing advice for health. Local pharmacies, services available at the pharmacies. Medicines, including reading labels, and dosage and timings of medicines by using numbers. 6) Accessing locals services in Sandwell area, including Healthy Sandwell, show learners how to access website. Importance of mental health and wellbeing. Make learners aware what to except at GP and advice services in Sandwell, and other services are also available including quit gambling, smoking, alcohol and drugs, also house protection from damp, how to report it and school holidays activities for kids. Looking at My Sandwell account. 7) Use of public transportation and how to buy tickets. Daily time and how to read timetables on public transportation and tickets. 12 hours and 24 hours clock. 8) Bookings: Booking tickets, including bus, train and airline, and completing library forms. Completing simple forms online and paper versions. 9) Occupation opportunities, options for paid work and volunteering. Job search on internet and local newspapers. Participants to look in more detail what goes into a CV, explore qualifications that will hence their CV’s. Also look at current skills they have and what they can improve on. Also look at current job’s available to fit their skills and look at taking up volunteering opportunities locally. 10) Digital skills – learners will use this throughout the course, they will learn how to stay safe online, convert pages into their language to get a better understanding of the contents. Learners will be shown how to find out information about other services online.

About the organisation
North Smethwick Development Trust provides provides a range of local services and activities from Brasshouse Community Centre. It operates as a development trust and is concerned with the long term rengeneration of the North Smethwick area using an independent community led approach. Its founding ideas are to: facilitate the residents of North Smethwick to actively participate in, and contribute to, the process of improving the qualityof life in the area.
