OASIS is a free service providing individualised support to people aged 55+ in Smethwick and parts of Oldbury. The service aims to support people to stay healthy and well and live independently in their own homes for longer. The project supports people with a variety of issues from very low level support to much more complex issues. The service takes the approach of ‘no one size fits all’. A home visit is offered to gain a full understanding of the person’s individual needs. By informally chatting to that person in their home environment, a good insight into their support needs can be gained and addressed accordingly. OASIS has built up a good knowledge base in order to be able to refer into the most appropriate service for the person’s needs. These services include local clubs and activities to reduce loneliness and isolation, gentle exercise sessions especially catering for older adults to improve their health and well-being. OASIS can also refer into statutory services to enable people to be assessed for personal care needs or those of a carer, aids and adaptations to help someone remain safe and well in their home or access to personal alarms, is a lifeline to someone who lives alone. Referrals can be made into a handyman scheme for those smaller jobs that could potentially be a risk to someone who has health issues. Often older people are unaware of what services are available to them and how to access these services. The OASIS project is able to be the link to all the services and in turn ensure the client receives all the support and assistance available to them. Referrals into the service come from many sources including Adult Social Services, GP’s and other health professionals. However, friend/family and self referrals are also welcomed.
